Day 1. Arrival & Imperial City

Arrive in Wiener Neustadt — Austria's most southern large city, an ancient imperial foundation (1194) that was once the residence of the Habsburg emperors and one of the most important cities of the medieval Holy Roman Empire. The city has a remarkable concentration of medieval and Renaissance monuments, including the extraordinary Dom (Cathedral) with its 15 coats of arms of the Habsburg dynasty on the outer wall, the Military Academy (Theresianische Militärakademie, 1752 — the oldest military academy in the world still functioning in its original building), and the remarkable Neukloster monastery. Evening stroll in the pedestrianised old town. Overnight in Wiener Neustadt.

Day 2. Schneeberg Mountain & Semmering Pass

After breakfast, excursion to the Schneeberg (2,076 m) — the highest peak in Lower Austria, accessible by the remarkable Schneebergbahn (1897), the highest narrow-gauge mountain railway in Austria, offering extraordinary views over the eastern Alps. Alternatively, drive the historic Semmering Pass (985 m) — a UNESCO World Heritage railway (1848–1854, the first mountain railway in the world), through extraordinary Alpine scenery to the elegant resort of Semmering. Overnight in Wiener Neustadt.

Day 3. Burg Forchtenstein & Departure

Morning: excursion to Burg Forchtenstein — the most impressive castle in Burgenland, perched dramatically on a forested crag above the Rosaliengebirge, with an extraordinary treasury of the Esterházy family including weapons, armour, portraits and the carriage collection. Transfer to Wiener Neustadt Hauptbahnhof for connections to Vienna Airport.
