Day 1. Arrival & Hauptplatz
Arrive in Linz — Austria's third-largest city, the vibrant capital of Upper Austria and a UNESCO City of Media Arts (2014), spectacularly transformed from its industrial past into a world leader in digital culture and contemporary art. Begin at the Hauptplatz — one of the largest medieval market squares in central Europe (220 x 60 metres), dominated by the magnificent marble Trinity Column (Dreifaltigkeitssäule, 1723). Walk the Landstraße — the main shopping street — and explore the charming old town above the Danube. In the evening, visit the Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz — a stunning glass and steel building glowing red and blue beside the Danube, housing an outstanding collection of Austrian art (Klimt, Schiele, Kokoschka and Kiesler). Overnight in Linz.
